Sheath / シース:

 The outer covering or jacket of a multi-conductor cable. / 多極ケーブルの外側の被覆。

Shield / シールド:

 In cables, a metallic layer placed around a conductor or group of conductors to prevent electrostatic or electromagnetic interference between the enclosed wire and external fields. See Braid. / ケーブルにおいて、囲まれたワイヤと外部フィールドとの間の静電または電磁干渉を防ぐために、導体または導体のグループの周囲に配置される金属層。参照（See Braid.）。

Shield Effectiveness / シールド効果:

 The ability of a shield to screen out undesirable signals and prevent leakage. / 望ましくない信号を遮断し、漏洩を防ぐシールドの機能。

SI / SI:

 The standard international system of metric units of measurement. / メートル法を定める国際標準。

Silica Glass (Fiber Optic) / 石英ガラス (光ファイバ):

 Glass made mostly from silica (silicon dioxide, SiO2) used to make fibers. / 主成分が珪酸(二酸化ケイ素、SiO2)で作られたガラスファイバ。

Simplex Cable (Fiber Optic) / 単信ケーブル (光ファイバ):

 A single fiber cable. / 光ファイバ一本が含まれるケーブル。

Single Mode Fiber (Fiber Optic) / シングルモードファイバ (光ファイバ):

 Abbreviated as SMF, a fiber having a small core diameter (approximately 9 microns) with a cladding having a refractive index very close to that of the core. Will transmit light in a single mode that enters at a narrow angle but will transmit over very wide bandwidths. / SMF と略称され、小さなコア直径 (約 9 ミクロン) を持ち、コアの屈折率に非常に近い屈折率を持つクラッドを備えたファイバです。 狭い角度で入射する単一モードの光を送信しますが、非常に広い帯域幅にわたって送信します。

SMPTE / SMPTE:

" An acronym for ""Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers,"" a USA standards organization. / Society of Motion Picture & Television  Engineeringの略語で、米国標準化組織。"

Socket Contact / ソケットコンタクト:

" A female contact designed to mate with a male contact. It is normally connected to the ""live"" side of a circuit. / オスコンタクトと嵌合するように設計されたメスコンタクト。 通常、回路の「ライブ」側に接続されます。"

Solder / 半田:

 A metal or metal alloy, usually having a low melting point, used to join other metals having higher melting points than the solder. / 通常は低融点の金属または金属合金で、はんだよりも融点の高い他の金属を接合するために使用されます。

Solder Cup / はんだカップ:

 A tubular end of a terminal in which a conductor is inserted prior to being soldered. It is also the hollow cylinder at the rear of a solder contact where a wire is inserted and soldered in place. / 金属又は合金で融点が低く、はんだよりも融点の高い金属通しを接続する時に用いられる。

Solid Conductor / 固体導体:

 A conductor consisting of a single wire. / 1本のワイヤからなる電線

Spring Finger Action / スプリングフィンガーアクション:

 Design of a contact as used in a printed circuit connector or a socket contact, permitting easy, stress-free spring action to provide contact pressure and/or retention. / プリント基板やソケットコンタクトに使われる接触型のコンタクトで、動作中に不要なストレスが発生せずに押し圧や引っ張りに強い。

Step Index Fiber (Fiber Optic) / ステップインデックスファイバ（光ファイバ）:

 A multimode fiber consisting of a core of uniform refractive index surrounded by cladding of a slightly lower refractive index. Accepts light rays over wider angle, but has smaller bandwidth than single mode fiber. Stranded Conductor / 撚線導体:

 A conductor composed of groups of wires twisted together. / 複数の細いワイヤーが撚られてまとめられたワイヤ

Surface Mounting / 表面実装:

 The electrical connection of components to the surface of a conductive pattern without utilizing component holes in a circuit board. / 回路基板へ電装部品を装着する際に穴の開いていない導体パターンの表面に取り付けること。
