Manufacturing engineer

Summary
Translate customer requirements into cost effective designs within budget and on schedule. Develop cost-effective cable assemblies from engineering designs utilyzing injection molding, fiber optic, and standard soldering and crimping technology. Writes clear assembly instructions to support operations in the assembly and test of custom cable and connecter assemblies. Manages customer specific projects for reliability, quality and performance to specification. May develop new processes utilizing automated assembly and testing.
Salary Range: $85,000 - $105,000
Work Location: On-site in Rohnert Park, CA
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develop and conduct Design of Experiments (DOEs) for injection molding processes specific to material testing, machine or process development, optimization, or part prototyping.
- Identify key process indicators (KPIs) and collect data into meaningful metrics on a routine basis. Use basic SPC to monitor performance and suggest areas of improvement.
- Create and maintain required documentation for manufacturing processes, including flow charts, capacity and utilization studies, time and motion studies, standard work, cycle time analysis, and line balancing.
- Review customer specifications for Build to Custom Design projects. Provide feedback to Project Managers and customers as required.
- Design and develop robust manufacturing concepts to simplify and improve processes and ensure best practices.
- Taking an active lead in design for Manufacturability / Assembly Responsible for tool & process validation (PPAP), DQ, IQ, OQ, PQ.
- Perform PFMEA Risk Analyses when required (ISO 13485 opportunities), develop plans to mitigate risk, and keep PFMEA alive throughout product life.
- Identify and introduce new or enhanced process capabilities to LEMO manufacturing work centers.
- Perform root cause analyses for critical problems. Propose and implement corrective measures to address customer complaints.
- Research and test design ideas to determine feasibility, utilizing lean manufacturing, kaizen, Six Sigma, and root-cause analysis to formulate and support innovation, implement corrective actions, and improvements.
- Assist day-to-day operations in the manufacturing assembly area to optimize workflow, work thru short- term problems, and lead assembly teams to maintain efficiency.
- Undertake other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering preferred (BSME, BSIE), or significant directly related work experience
- Three (3) years minimum experience in the mold making and injection molding industry
- Proven track record in manufacturing to support the over-molding and design process
- Work with Design Engineering to support injection mold designs for medical, defense and commercial applications
- Understanding of Cable and Connector assemblies and fabrication process.
- Strong organization and time management skills
- Experience sourcing and installing capital equipment
Preferred Qualifications/Skills:
- Extensive experience in plastic mold design, developing and optimizing injection mold processing parameters, machining and mold fabrication and assembly techniques, mold maintenance
- Knowledge of fiber optic polishing and cable assembly
- Knowledge of various plastic materials used in the injection molding process such as PEEK, POM, PTFE, FEP, VMQ, Rubber, Polyamide, Polyurethane, PA6.6, PPSU, PSU, etc.
- Proficient CAD Drafting skills – AutoCAD, Inventor, plus Microsoft Office tools
- Familiarity with IPC 610/620 standards, ISO 9001, ISO 13485, FDA

- Equipment Used: Computer and office equipment and tools used in Cable Assembly and Connector Assembly departments; May work on equipment including injection machine, injection molds, CNC machines, Lasers, test equipment, crimp applicators and presses, programmable prep equipment, automated dispensing equipment, etc.
- Essential Physical Tasks: Sitting and/or standing for prolonged periods of time; Able to lift 25 lbs. on occasion
