The time has long passed since customers only cared about the suitable number of pins in a connector to transmit their power and data. Today, applications often require high-speed transmission which must be delivered subject to strict protocols. Any interface between two devices creates an obstacle for signal transmission. 

These variations in electrical resistance (known as impedance variations) may occur at the contacts, the receptacle pins, the solder interface, or through the choice of wire or insulator. The potential result of impedance is that the signal may be altered, becoming undecipherable by the time it reaches its destination.

In order to ensure that high-speed signals travel from one device to another without loss or distortion, special attention needs to be given to the connector design, cable selection and cable assembly, in order to limit the effect of insertion loss, attenuation, return loss and crosstalk.
