Chapter 4: The 1970s

Expanding Horizons

and Advancing Technology

The 1970s were shaped by the end of the Vietnam War and two major oil crises that shook global economies. Environmentalism surged with the first Earth Day in 1970 (after the Santa Barbara oil spill), while pop culture flourished: ABBA, who rose to fame after winning Eurovision in 1974, became global icons of the decade’s upbeat, polished pop sound. Social movements - from feminism to environmental activism - continued to gain momentum. Early breakthroughs in microelectronics hinted at the digital age to come.

In Switzerland, the decade brought significant social change as women gained federal voting rights in 1971, and the country wrestled with the consequences of the energy crises. During the first oil crisis in 1973, the Swiss government even introduced “car-free Sundays" to save fuel.

LEMO continued its growth and international expansion with subsidiaries founded in Austria (1970), UK and USA (1972).
In 1975, the second LEMO factory, named LEMO 5, was built in Delémont, in the Jura region, the birthplace of Léon Mouttet.

Based on feedback from customers and distributors, a brand-new Push-Pull series was designed and launched on the market in 1977. Among its many improvements, the B Series offers a more complex keying system to prevent operating errors. A watertight version, the K Series was also proposed in the meantime.

The first four original series (S, E, B & K) have positioned LEMO as a manufacturer of high performance interconnect solutions. Their quality has never been challenged and they are still the most successful LEMO Series.

The first industrial robots were installed at the LEMO factory in 1978. That same year, Léon Mouttet stepped down from his position and appointed Marcello Pesci as his successor at the helm of LEMO.
